Why We Feel Overwhelmed - Part 3

00:00:11 Hello. This is Dr. Shawn with reduced stress and thrive. Welcome to this live show. And today we're going to discuss a little bit about why we feel overwhelmed. And I've been thinking about some of the reasons why sometimes I feel overwhelmed and just the season that we've been in this past year. And, you know, I, I think about some of the conversations I've had with clients that I've worked with this past year.

00:00:35 And, you know, one thing that I've connected with is one of the primary reasons we feel overwhelmed is our expectations. You know, our expectations have really been messed with this past year. No one would've thought 2020 would have looked like the way it did. And just a lot of the restrictions, a lot of the things that we've had to do to help mitigate the spread of this pandemic.

00:01:03 A lot of the, you know, staying home the different expectations regarding work regarding school with our kids. I have kids in high school as well as in college. And, you know, each of their worlds were turned upside down and many of us adults could say the same as we've walked this out. And so we've had to throw a lot of,

00:01:25 of our expectations out the window, so to speak and, and find a new normal. And so I think a lot of times when we have expectations that are not met, that can create a real sense of stress or anxiety, and there could be a real worry if those expectations, those things that we want, or we feel that should be whatever return.

00:01:52 And so I think it also has to deal with an issue of control in our lives. In other words, when we have expectations, we tend to try to control the reality around us to meet those expectations. And that's how we feel a sense of security and all as well in our world. And so I I've been reflecting about the expectations that I have and how that relates to the stress that I have felt this past year at certain times.

00:02:22 And so I just encourage you to think about your expectations and how have some of the expectations you've had been changed or messed with. And also how have some of those expectations caused stress in your own life. And do we need to adjust some of our expectations and find a new normal and find a level of peace and joy, peace of mind and the peace of God,

00:02:47 or even tap into spiritual practices where we can gain God's perspective or God's truth regarding what we're experiencing in the life that we're living. I think finding joy or even practicing gratitude, especially at the beginning of the day, like, what are we grateful for? What do we have in front of us that we can really tap into or dive into that would create a connection that would create joy that would create a sense of peace and wellbeing.
